You can approach it in two practical ways: buy Pikmin 1 on its own, or buy Pikmin 1+2 if you already know you want both early games. For most curious players, the standalone Switch version is enough. The bundle makes sense if you are intentionally starting a series playthrough and expect to continue into Pikmin 2.

The original GameCube version is still the purist option, but it is not the practical recommendation for most people. It requires original hardware or a compatible setup, plus a legitimate copy. The old Wii and Wii U route is also not the normal starting point for new buyers today, especially because the Wii U eShop is no longer a new-purchase path.

So the practical answer is simple: play the Switch version unless you already have a strong reason to use original hardware.

Why this is the recommended version

That rewind feature is more important than it may sound. Pikmin is built around daily planning, limited time, and the possibility of wasting a day. On GameCube, a bad day can feel like something you either accept or redo manually. On Switch, the game is still tense, but it is easier to learn without feeling trapped by one poor decision.

There are reasons a purist may still prefer the GameCube release. It is the original version, with the original presentation and control feel. Some players also care about small content differences in later releases, especially when comparing original and Switch-era versions. For a normal player trying to enjoy Pikmin today, those concerns do not outweigh convenience.

The only real buying question is whether to get Pikmin 1 alone or Pikmin 1+2. Choose the standalone version if you are testing the series. Choose the bundle if you are already committed to playing both.

Is it still worth playing?

Yes, with caveats. Pikmin is still worth playing if you want a short, focused, unusual strategy game rather than a long modern adventure. Its appeal is not size or spectacle. It is the feeling of improving your daily plan, directing a fragile crowd, and turning a messy expedition into a clean route.

It is also still the clearest way to understand the original Pikmin idea. Later entries add more comfort, variety, and onboarding, but the first game has a tightness that remains valuable. It is small, direct, and built around one strong concept.

That said, it is not automatically the best first Pikmin game for everyone. If you are casual, timer-averse, or mainly curious because the series looks charming, Pikmin 4 may be the better starting point. It is more modern, has a demo, and is friendlier to players who want onboarding before pressure.

The recommendation is therefore split but clear. If you want to play Pikmin 1, play it on Switch. If you want the gentlest way into the series, consider Pikmin 4 first.
